Time for something a little different, Im not really sure what the title means but it sounds impressive and suitable for this. I rekindled my love for 01/02 during the current exam leave and I now have Blackpool in 2022/2023 season. Regens are retiring now! Cherno Samba is possibly the only player from 2001/2002 season still in the game. What I plan to do is give a run through of players careers. Some you will have heard of, many you wont have. All will have contributed to Blackpool or Elversberg at some point. It isnt strictly a managers diary or anything but this place is crying out for originality and this is just a little bit different. Cherno Samba DOB: 16/4/1985 Age: (End of 2022/2023) 38 English (51 Caps 24 Goals Club Career: Millwall (2001-2007) 132 Apps 96 Goals Sevilla (2007-2019) 480 Apps 366 Goals Blackpool (2019-2021) 19 Apps 8 Goals Middlesborough (2021-2002) 39 Apps 6 Goals Chelsea (2022-2023) 0 Apps Major Honours FA Cup Winner 2004 Spanish Cup Winner 2018 Spanish Super Cup Winner 2018 Premiership 2020 The Millwall trainee was touted as huge prospect by the officials at the club from a very early age. He signed professional terms aged 16 and was on the books for the 2001/2002 season. The club however were perforing well in the league and Neil Harris and Giovanni Savarese were the preferred partnership up front, leaving Samba without a look in. At Christmas, with the squad depleted Samba stared again Preston. The 2-3 defeat was only noticeable for Samba becoming the clubs youngest ever goalscorer. The coaches did not want to rush anything though and he did not feature again that season, but he did very well in the reserves. In 2002/2003 Millwall were again on top form, Neil Harris banging in many goals. Come April they looked well set for a play-off but an injury to Harris and a reserve striker meant Samba stepped in against Wimbledon on the 11th April. He impressed in the 4-1 win and the 4-1 win the following week. Millwall got through the play-offs and secured promotion to the premiership. In 4 appearances the 18 year old scored 5 goals. 2003/2004 was a huge success story for Millwall and Samba. Samba started 13 games and notched an impressive 12 goals, as he looked very classy even against class premiership defences. He helped Millwall finish 5th and reach Europe and in all competitions scored 14 goals in 16 appearances. He earned an U21 call up too and the English press were hyping him up beyond belief and calling for a place in the Euro 2004 squad for him, which Sven ignored. To cap a great season he won an FA Cup final winners medal after defeating Preston 1-0. The next season saw Samba establish himself fully at Millwall. His performances were amazing and he got 22 goals in 24 league games. Big clubs were after him but he said his heart remained at Millwall. A slightly less successful season as the club only finished 8th and lost out early in Europe. He eventually made his England debut aged 20 in a June friendly against Portugal. He said he was unbeleivably nervous when he came on but he did really well. It was the first of many caps though unfortunately they were spread over a time when Englands fortunes fell. There were two more goal laden seasons at Millwall but there came a point at the end of 2007 when his contract was up. As much as he loved Millwall he needed a great move to really make him a star. Now 22 he wasn't just a youngster with potential, he really had to make the step up. He said himself: quote: By Cherno Samba in May 2007 I have to move on. I have had a fanstastic time at Millwall but it is time to move on. Hopefully one day I can return.
It seemed that every club in Europe was linked with him. Man Utd as always seemed favourites but a stumbling block with the wages and the fact they were viewed as a team in decline meant they were surprisingly slung for Spanish club Sevilla. It was the start of an amazing run of form which meant Samba was probably Europes top striker for a good long time. What is so sad was that despite all his exploits there was very little in the way of silverware returned. The close calls came in 2011/2012 and 2016/2017 where the club came second in the league. In 2016/2017 they had the highest ever total of points not to win the league. The 2018 Spanish Cup was all he had to show for season after season of brilliance. His first season saw new heights recahed with 44 goals in only 39 games. He walked away with fans player of the year award which he won 7 times. He helped the development of Manuel Cordero, a young Spanish star signed from Raith Rovers aged 20. Between 2011 and 2019 they shared a truely prolific attack. Between 2013-2016 a three pronged attack of Cordero, Samba and Saviola was the most feared in Europe. How they did not record more success is beyond most players who faced them at the time. In 2017 they reached there peak. Samba may have by then been 31 but him and a young Cordero scored 61 goals between them. Only 3 defeats in the last 5 games cost them the league after an amazing run of form. They also fell in the Champions League to Lille after a controversial penalty late on. Samba could never again reach the heights of that season but played on with great skill for another 2 season. At the start of 2018/2019 he announced he would not be signing a new contract and would leave the club at the end of the season. Then 33, he wanted to move back to England. He scored 29 goals in his final season and they finished a distant second to Valencia. He made a tearful farewell after over ten years of great performances. He was a true legend at the club and was voted their greatest ever player. Cordero has since filled his boots with pride until a recent move to Roma. Ironically, with the dream partners both having gone Sevilla top the league in early 2023. A move back to Millwall was touted but Blackpool stepped in. Reigning premier division champions they wanted an old head to bring through the talented young forwards Jackson and Hall. Samba jumped at the chance to join and hoped for some performance to rekindle his interntaional career. Two World Cup quarter finals were all they he had to show for 51 caps. That in itself was a disappointing haul, but it seemed a case of out of sight out of mind often. The pace of the premiership was beginning to be a bit much for Sambas aging legs. He did contribute 5 goals in 12 league appearances which earned him a league winners medal at last. The next season we saw very little of Samba as he fell out with the manager and the players and was dropped. It was very unlike him and when his contract expired in 2021 we assumed that was the end for one of Britains most talented players. However Middlesborough tempted him for a season in division 1, aged 36. Samba was a useful old head but it appeared much of the motivation and drive had gone, along with his pace and power. He scored 6 goals in 38 appearances and also earned a coaching badge. In 2022 Chelsea, also in Division 1 signed him as a coach and as an emergency player. He is yet to make an appearance and will hang up his boots for good in the summer of 2023 after 22 years of football. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. The next player is an absolute legend. Neil Clarke will forever live in the hearts of Blackpool fans for his amazing performances. He returned to the club aged 35 and performed at the highest level for them.Neil Clark DOB: 26/1/1985 Retired in 2022 Aged 37 English (12 Caps 3 Goals) Club Career: Chemnitz (2003-2006) 12 Apps 4 Goals Augsburg (Loan 2005/2006) 33 Apps 16 Goals Blackpool (2006-2013) 233 Apps 133 Goals Man Utd (2013-2014) 25 Apps 7 Goals Derby (2014-2018) 135 Apps 44 Goals Blackpool (2018-2022) 98 Apps 59 Goals Major Honours FA Cup Winner 2014 Charity Shield Winner 2018, 2019 Premiership 2019, 2020, 2021,2022
Mention the name Neil Clarke to most Chemnitz fans and they will tell you about the England and Blackpool striker. What many will not be able to recall is his brief and unspectacular career with the German Regional club. One player who does remember is club chairman Lutz Waszik. quote: By Lutz Waszik in 2023 We signed Neil as a trainee in July 2003. He made a few appearances as an 18 year old that season and notched a few goals but the manager preferred German players. To be honest we never thought he would go on to be anything really special.
He signed after going on a trial by chance in a German holiday. His first season was a major success, given he was abroad on his own at only 18. In 8 starts he got 4 goals. Things didnt progress as hoped and in 2004/2005 he made very few appearances. In 2005/2006, around the time Samba was making major headlines in England, Neil Clark was joining Augsburg on loan for a season. Given an important role in the team he scored pretty much a goal every other game, getting 16 in 33. This alerted a few scouts from England, and with his Chemnitz career already all but over and now keen for a return to England he joined Blackpool in 2006 for £240,000. The team had just been promoted to division one but his signing seemed like a risk. He was still pretty unproven and it was a reasonable outlay for a player. His first season at Blackpool went brilliantly. Well trained in Germany he took to the English game like a duck to water. In a tough division one he scored 18 goals in 36 appearances and was instantly a fans favourite. Blackpool reached the play-off final, one game away from the premiership, but lost 3-0 to Southampton. From being one game away from the top league the next season Blackpool were relegated back to division 2. The manager at the time, Kevin Summerfield came under huge criticism for taking a team from 5th to 24th in the league in a year. Clark had a touch of the second season blues, netting only 13 in 27 appearances as Brett Ormerod stole the plaudits. In a lower level Clark really stood out. Summerfield did well to keep him at the club and he repayed them with plenty of goals. Him and Ormerod up front were scoring plenty but the defence was leaky. 3 seasons were spent in division 2, Clark got 21 in 39, 16 in 34 then 12 in 33 in a disastorous season where they got relegated to division 3. At 26, and supposedly at his peak, Clark was lining un in Englands bottom division. If anybody had told you he would one day line up for England with Cherno Samba they would have laughed at you. Summerfield was sacked and Ian Hamilton came in. He shakily took the team to 3rd and the final promotion place before jumping ship early in the summer to Sheffield United. Clark had just scored 37 goals in 48 games and for the second year was fans player of the year. Ormerod retired in the summer and Clark considered a move to rejumpstart his career. Then Blackpool pulled off one of footballs greatest managerial appointments. From Champions League winning Elversberg came Stephen Moffat. He gave no good reason as to why he had left the European Champions to join a team newly promoted to division two. To be continued... -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? They're a mile away and you have their shoes. I have no more to say

Blackpool started division two very impresivelly. Moffat showing why he was regarded as one of Europes best managers, and after taking Elversberg to glory from the bottom league there was a tonne of weight on his shoulders to repeat this at Blackpool. Neil Clark helped the club along with 16 goals in the first 14 games. This caught the attention of some teams who had been monitoring his progress, but nobody could beleive it when Man Utd bid for him, £1.7m too good for a division 2 side to turn down. Blackpool signed Angel Moya the next day and Clark was almost instantly forgotten, despite being a goalscoring legend for 6 years. It was every boys dream to sign for Man Utd, and many supporters were impressed to see young talent (even though he was 26) snapped up from the lower leagues. It was hoped he could take his goalscoring form into the top league. Unfortunately the partnership of Pizzaro and Ben Jones was unstoppable. Clark made only 1 sub appearance all season, which angered him. Although he was now on great money it was a wasted season for him, espicially as he was now 27. For many players this would have been the begininng of the end, and he would have sat out his 4 year contract and then retired or gone back to the lower leagues, never being the same player again. His cause wasnt helped in the summer as Marc Erdmann was signed for £12.5m and Santa Cruz for £11.5m. Clark at least made some league appearances, scoring 3 goals in 5 starts and 7 appearances as a sub, which was not bad at all after a season of little first team football. He won an FA Cup winners medal as an unused sub. In 2014/2015 it was obvious the dream had gone sour. Little first team football was offered again and in February, after only 5 starts (with 4 goals) Derby came in with a great offer. Their £3m bid was accepted and meant he had another chance to make a mark in the premiership. The Derby Manager said: quote: By John Cockerill I could see Clark had considerable talent. I was amazed he was nearing 30 and hadnt yet had a proper opportunity in the top flight.
He replayed the Derby manager with 11 goals in 12 games as they finished 11th.The second season was solid but unspectacular. Still a total of 12 goals at the end wasnt anything to be ashamed of. And he achieved one of his earliest dreams, when he pulled on an England shirt againt Holland, partnering Samba. His performance was solid in a 2-1 defeat, and scored in his next game, a 2-0 win over Croatia. He started all 3 games in the 2016 European Championships failure and by the end of 2016/2017 had 11 caps, scoring 3 goals. He was again solid at Derby and looked to have made a good name for himself in his career as an above average journeyman striker. 7 goals in 38 games meant his contract wasnt renewed and at 33 it looked like his career was over and he could look back over international caps and an FA Cup winners medal, along with being able to say he played for Man Utd at Old Trafford. But Blackpool came in for him and he couldnt resist linking up with Moffat and returning to his old club. Things had changed considerably, Roosien and Jansen were upfront for a team that were now in the Champions League and challenging for the premiership. Clark played in a 3 with Jansen and Roosien and scored 2 on his debut againt Birmingham. It was the start of an amazing season where he scored 21 goals in 39 games. He starred in an amazing Champions League semi final. After losing 4-1 to Roma in the Stade Olimpico Blackpool were decimated with injuries and played two teenagers in defence in the home leg. Needing a 3-0 win to go through, Blackpool led 2-0 until Leonadri scored late on. Clarks penalty made it 3-1 though in one of Blackpools most famous matches. At the end of an amazing season he got his hands on a premiership medal and had people begging for him to get an England recall. The next season his legs started to go but in general most of the times he played he scored. At 35 towards the end of the season he was voted Englands deadliest forward. Moffat had to take much credit for this amazing form but Clark had now achieved legend status, and even made an England appearance as sub in a qualifier. At Blackpool he was now immortal and he got his second premiership winners medal. 15 goals in 23 appearances meant when he played, he scored. Season 2020/2021 was an amazing season that saw Clarks stock rise even more. Employed as a sub in the league he scored almost every time he came on and changed countless games. Blackpool fans voted him as the top player in their history and there was still some calls for him to play for England. In the Champions League he was MOM after he scored in a 2-0 win away to FC Koln which set up a semi final tie with Milan. He sat out the first leg, a 0-0 draw, but came on in the second leg with the scores at 1-1, meaning Blackpool were heading out. Glenn Jansen put Blackpool 2-1 up and in the last minute Clarks low drive went in and we were definitely in the final. His goal capped off an epic performance, which was desecribed by a TV pundit as one of the best European performances by a player he had seen. However young Hall and Jackson were preferred up front for the final. Blackpool were destroyed, but Clark came on with ten minutes to go and became the first Englishman to score in the Champions League final for 10 years. But the 3-1 defeat was hugely disappointing and he vowed to play another season. He agreed with Moffat he would be used more sparingly as at 38 his body was feeling the wear and tear of life at the top. Season 2021/2022 without Clark meant that Blackpool struggled for goals. At the start of the season £9.25m was spent on David Jack from Hearts. In December £10m is spent on Hector Blanco but with the league getting close and Champions League getting to its final stages Moffat finally admits Clark will solve the goalscoring problem. He gets the winner in a key game away to Bolton then the next week scored two as we beat Carlisle 2-0. He then put in a MOM performance in France, scoring the winner as we beat Nantes 2-1 away which almost guaranteed us a spot in the final. The next game he grabbed the opener against Hull, and featured against Nantes as we made our way to the final. The game against Sheffield United was his last ever appearance. He was injured after 14 minutes, a twisted knee which ruled him out until the end of the season. Ironically without him we then stuck 5 past Arsenal on the final day but he was sorely missed when we fell to Betis again. It was a sad way when he could have had the ultimate ffinale. It says something when a team spends £20m on new talent yet rely on a 37 year old to clinch the league title for them. Clark was possibly the ultimate late bloomer, his first international cap at 31 and his first premiership title at 34. He then won 3 more. His retirement from the playing staff (he remained as coach), left major problems for Blackpool and Moffat as they looked for a new prolific striker. Nobody will touch the hearts of the team quite like Neil Clark did though. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? Marchel is regarded as the most successful Belarusian players ever and has a playing career and medals collection to rival any top player. He has amassed over £25m in transfer fees as he has moved around the clubs. It all started at Dinamo Minsk. The club had already brought us Maxim Tsigalko and there were plenty of scouts at their games looking for the next talent of the Minsk conveyor belt. At the start of the 2006/2007 season they gave a player only just turned 17 his debut. His performances were fantastic in his debut season. Equally happy in midfield or attack he scored 17 goals and created 15 and had everybody raving about his promise. The second season began with many big scouts at games watching. Kriushenko performed less spectacularly for the first few games, getting only 1 goal in 7 starts. It had impressed Elversberg boss Stephen Moffat enough and in September 2007 he moved for only £100,000 to Germany. Elversberg were newly promoted to the Bundesliga but Kriushenko was given a starting place immediately. He joined fellow Belarusian Max Tsigalko at the Waldtadion and they helped defy all their critics to finish in 6th and gain a European place. Kriushenko was initially overawed but the fans are patient with youngsters and he did notch 2 goals in 17 appearances. For a youngster away from home he wasnt expected to set the world alight. The season ended with a Cup win and his first international cap, against France. Season 2008/2009 was an improvement. With the benefit of pre-season training with the squad and having been here almost a year he was more settled and 48 Apps brought 4 goals and 5 assists. It was nothing to set the world alight but for a 19 year old Moffat was suitably impressed. Unfortunately the 2009 summer saw big moves to Elversberg. Thach, Carratero and Madiera all came in to bolster the attack leaving no place for Kriushenko. It was frustrating for him after being a regular the last season. Injuries, suspensions and lots of matches did mean he made 31 appearances, with 5 goals scored. He picked up a league winners medal and vowed to work hard to regain his place in the team. After a solid summers work and a clear out of Mackie, Klose and Madiera Kriushenko was told by Moffat he was going to be a regular starter. Moffat had nothing but praise for his hard work that summer. quote: By Stephen Moffat Some youngsters after losing their place after a good start fall by the wayside and never fill their early potential. Marchel was never like that. As soon as it looked like he wasnt going to make it he knuckled down and worked twice as hard. Thats why he is still playing at 35 and why he has gone on to win so many trophies.
The next two season Kriushenko was part of one of the greatest teams ever assembled. They blasted the Bundesliga apart and won back to back Champions Leagues. Kriushenko was a key member of the team over these two years, scoring 22 and creating 28 for players like Thach and Carratero to score. His all round play was great and after winning just about every tournament he then took Belarus to the 2012 European Championship finals, but they lost out. However Kriushenko was regarded as one of Europes top players and had the medals to match. At the start of the 2012 season though Moffat left Elversberg with no warning, joining Blackpool, and new manager Holger Fraidrich led Europes best team to 11th in the league. Kriuschenko was one of the bright lights of the season, with 3 goals and 13 assists in 45 games not bad for a struggling team. However it was clear he wanted a move after seeing a dramatic decline in Elversberg fortunes. Even when they brought in new manager Uwe Wolters in October 2013 which brought about a turn in fortunes he insisted on a move, so in December 2013 FC Bayern bid and for only £8.25m he was off to arguable Germanys biggest club. TO BE CONTINUED... Can Kriushenko settle at Bayern? [ 25 May 2004: Message edited by: Blue Army ] -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? FC Bayern had for many years been Germanys biggest and most successful club. Up until 2012/2013 they hadn't finished lower than 4th in the division. But they had a strange season. They got off to an awful start but everybody said they were too good to go down. They werent. They were relegated in 16th place and Germanys top club were to ply their trade in division 2 (think Man Utd being relegated next season). Yet they got to the final of the UEFA Cup.Many eyebrows were raised when Kriushenko joined a 2nd division team. They thought he was crazy for leaving Elversberg (who went on to win the league). FC Bayern limped into the 3rd promotion spot though, Kriushenko got 2 goals in 14 appearances. Kriushenko enjoyed a successful spell at the club. In their first season back up they finished 2nd by a point to Elversberg. Kriushenko was a solid and at times spectacualr performer. 6 goals in only 30 appearances meant he wasnt getting the first team action he hoped and a few people questioned the move as Elversberg seemed on the rise again. The next season, 2015/2016, when Kriushenko was 26, he proved all his doubters wrong. Playing in midfield but being allowed to roam forward he was instrumental in Bundesliga success. Bayern had a team full of the Elversberg team successful years back, Kriushenko joined by Carratero and Hadzimehedovic. 30 league appearances brought 6 goals and 15 assists. He enjoyed a great run to the Champions League final too, maming 15 appearances (5 assists). In the final they faced Rostock. Rostock had recently finished 14th in the league and had had a somewhat lucky journey to the final. Bayern were overwhelming favourites but Kriushenkos bid to get a 3rd Champions League medal turned sour. Down to ten men and 2-0 behind after 28 minutes Bayern sunk to an embarassing 3-0 defeat. The next season was a disappointment on the pitch for Bayern as they slipped to 4th and faltered in Europe, but Kriushenko was again proving his worth. 48 Appearances, 6 goals and 15 assists. Next season Bayern regrouped and finished 2nd, 3 points behind Osnabruck, who beat them 4-0 late on in the season to all but secure the title. In only 41 appearances Kriushenko created 21 goals, but scored only 4. 2018/2019 saw Bayern, by now a spent force, finish only 5th and crash out in the Champions League semi final. Kriushenko was forced to play in left back at times which frustrated him and the manager was under pressure in the summer of 2019 to clear the older players from the team. Many were released on a free, but at only 30 Kriushenko, surplus to requirments, still commnaeded a £6.75m fee. He moved to Saarbrucken, Elversbergs deadly rivals, which angered a few Elversberg fans. It was a great move for him, although he had been loath to leave FC Bayern he was unwanted there and they were a team in decline. Saarbruken were becoming a major force, spurred on by Uwe Gerber and Jorg John. Kriushenko was good the first season as Saarbrucken finished in 3rd. 13 goals was a great return for him from left midfield and he he also had 14 assists in 47 appearances. Kriushenkos one bad move was to leave Saarbrucken early the next season. The club started the season poorly, Kriushenko scored 2 in 6 appearances but they lost 2 of their first 4, and reigning champions VFB Stuttgart came in with a £9.25m bid. For a 31 year old Saarbrucken had to accept and Kriushenko joined the champions. A good season for him followed but Stuttgart slipped to 3rd and Saarbrucken walked away with the title. Even in his 30s Kriushenko was a class act creating many goals. In early 2023 he won his 128th international cap, but hasnt been capped since then. He enjoyed some good seasons at Stuttgart but they decided at 34 and on high wages not to renew his contract as they wanted some new faces in. So in July 2023 he was released and faced with a search to find a new club. There was rumoured interest from Blackpool but he opted to stay in Germany and he dropped down to division 2 with Hertha Berlin. The lower division has been great for Kriushenko as he has peformed very well so far. At only 34 theres time for him to add some more silverware to his bulging cabinet. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? Time for the history of Osnabruck, a club who started at the bottom and worked there way up to the top for two glorious seasons then saw a spectacular collapse towards the bottom again.VFL Osnabruck HONOURS Regional Division North Winners 1999,2000,2002 Runners up 1995 Second Division Winners 2010,2022 3rd placed 2020 First Division Winners 2017,2018 German Cup Winners 2011,2018 German League Cup Winners 2018 Runners up 2017
Like Elversberg, Osnabruck began 2001/2002 stuck in the regionals. However they did have a good squad and promotion was expected first season. They duly provided and at 79 points won quite emphatically. Oleg Poulitto was the hero of the season but at the end they replaced their manager and Hans-Jurgen Kreishe was charged with keeping them in the 2nd division. 7 seasons followed with Osnabruck a mid-table division 2 side. Bernhard Weis was top scorer every year between 2002 and 2006 as Osnabruck finished between 10th and 13th every season. 2004/2005 may have been an unremarkable season, but it saw the debut for a 16 year old who was a mainstay in the team. A born and bred Osnabruck fan, Patrick Mangold started in midfield and looked class for a 16 year old. 3 goals and 11 assists wasnt bad for 35 appearances and Osnabruck knew they had a player on their hands. He would eventually go on to shape the teams history. In 2007 Osnabrucks board decided they needed a change of management if they were to go anywhere. Jurgen Delsdorf came in and they finished 7th the 2007/2008. Mangold, at only 19 was inspirational in the centre of midfield. The next season saw Mangold performance drop and saw a drop to 13th and Delsdrof was sacked. Jurgen Rober came in and the next season, with Mangold again fantastic they finished top of the 2nd division. For the next few seasons they hovered about in mid-table obscurity. However with Mangold driving the midfield with talented Englishman Mitchell, and Jesus and Bravo in attack Osnabruck suddenly had a fantastically talented team on their hands. They won the German Cup in 2011 but that led to their managed moving onto greater things, so Jurgen Klopp came in. For 6 years he slowly built a great team. Dos Santos, Mangold and Jesus was a fanstastic spine to build a team around. Mitchell, Bravo and Hadzimhadovic all player thier part and in 2017 they won the Bundesliga with 63 points. The next season they did it again. Mangold was arguabbly the worlds best player at this point, in 2018 he played 41 times, scored 16 and had 25 assists. They were labelled a one man team but this was unfair. However in summer of 2018 Mangold was sold to 1FC Koln for £16m, a decision which shocked many fans. They insisted they would do well without him, but he was never replaced. Having won the league in 2017 and 2018, Osnabruck were relegated in 2019. It was one of footballs most sudden declines and showed Osnabruck up as a 1 man team. They won promotion the following season but again got relegated. The players just couldnt do it and one of the most talented bunch of players seen in Germany gradually split up. Vogel then Worns came in to try and arrest the deline and thankfully Osnabruck seem settled in division 1 again. However 1 bad decision, the sale of Mangold, turned potential European champions into a 2nd division team in 1 season. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. Yay! Osnabrück! Some of those names you mentioned at the beginning of the Osnabrück history sound familiar. (I managed them for 3 years at the start before joining Stevenage for the Stevenage story). The Purples always seem to do well in games, right now in my Twelve Flowers game they've finished 5th or something in the top division and that's in 2006. KUTGW! (By the way, do you know how long this will go on for? Will you do a few histories, then carry on the game for another few seasons and do some more?) -------------------- Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage. He never played for me at any point, but this guy has had such an amazing career he deserves a mention.John Bowater DOB: 1/12/1987 Retired in 2023 Aged 35 English (53 Caps 22 Goals) Club Career Partick Thistle (2006-2008) 64 Apps 69 Goals Millwall (2008-2016) 295 Apps 173 Goals Man Utd (2016-2020) 166 Apps 62 Goals Real betis (2020-2022) 33 Apps 15 Goals Sporting Gijon (2022-2023) 28 Apps 12 Goals Major Honours Scottish League Challenge Cup Winner 2006 European Champions League Winner 2021,2022 European Super Cup Winner 2021 Intercontinental Cup Winner 2021 John Bowater was undoubtedly Englands top striker for a good ten years. His time at the peak of the English game coincided with Englands worst run of results in many years, leading to a drop to around 70th in the FIFA Rankings. He ended his career in Spain, where he won two Champions Leagues and came runner up in La Liga with Sporting Gijon in his final season. John Bowater had trials with Man Utd and Tottenham when he was young but was released by both as they didnt see his potential. At only 18 years old he already looked consigned to the scrapheap. In September 2006 though he was invited to train with Partick Thistle, in the Scottish first division. After only one training session he was signed as the coaches were left amazed he had every failed to make the grade elsewhere. His first season at Partick was more of a success then anybody could ever have imagined. He was young player of the month in September, November, December, January, Febraury and April. He ended 2006/2007 Scotlands top goalscorer after firing in 35 league goals and 42 in total in 42 appearances. He helped them lift the challenge cup as well, his only piece of silverware for 14 years. His performances had everybody at Partick amazed but the rest of the team didnt live up to expectations and they only finished 3rd. Despite a summer with the 19 year old being linked to bigger Scottish clubs he stayed on at the club. Any fears of the second season blues were dispelled with a hat-trick on day one. Goals kept coming, and after 22 goals in 18 league games and 27 in 22 overall Partick received a huge offer from Millwall. £3.5m was such a great offer for a 1st division side and they had to accept. For Bowater, although he had grown to love Partick the bigtime was far too big an opportunity to turn down. He left Partick in January with a record of over a goal a game and is still revered to this day. His fee was their highest outgoing transfer fee for 15 years. Being able to score in Scottish Division 1 and being able to score in the premiership were too entirely different things. History is riddled with players who failed to make the step up to higher divisions and saw their career falter. Bowater however was made for the Premiership. 9 goals in 12 games kept them in the premiership and his performances had people calling him to be called up for England. Manager Andy Ritchie said. quote: By Andy Ritchie 2007 John was one of the most naturally gifted forwards I'd ever seen. He could spend all game doing amazing things and then would top it all off with the end product. He worked so hard and fittted into teams straight away. He also had a great free-kick. Even from the first few games he was our star player
The next season saw Bowaters stock rise and rise. He averaged an amazing goal a game in the premiership, getting 36 goals in 36 games, 36 in 37 overall. This form for any player was amazing, let alone a 21 year old in his first full season at this level. Defences didnt know what had them as he was fast, strong and brave. He ended the season voted players player of the year and in 2009 finally made his England debut, against Luxembourg. 2009/2010 could almost be considered disappoitning, as he only got 22 goals in 27 league games! For England he got 3 goals in 6 games. Of course as was typical in English football having helped create a superstar the press spent much of this year trying to knock him down again. However "exlcusives" about him drinking or gambling were soon unfounded as he kept his head down and worked on his football. It had to be admired and was somedoby Jon Baily should have taken a leaf from his book (more on him in a future update). The most impressive thing was that he was scoring these goals in a struggling team, and the goals continued to flow in 2010/2011 when he grabbed 25 in 38 overall, again without the club reaching the top ten. It wasnt until 2011/2012 until Millwall finally got a team to match Bowater. It was rumoured he had countless offers to play elsewhere as his goalscoring record was legnedary but he was having none of it. In this season his 24 league goals helped the team finish 5th and reach Europe. He was regarded now as one of Europes deadliest players and was Englands star player. The predictable drop in form came about the next year though, with only 11 goals as the service dried up. He suffered a torn groin muscle in December and never seemed to recover looking unfit all season. Millwall rushed him back into action early and it had a noticeable affect as the goals dried up and the club plummeted down the division. He became a target for the boo-boys, despite being still there best player. It was a hard time for him and the next season he appeared to have lost some of the confidence he had been so full of. He was never again quite the same player. To Be Continued -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? They're a mile away and you have their shoes. 2013/2014 saw more troubles with Bowater. His goals had dried up and although his all round play had improved he only grabbed 11 league goals, 16 overall. He was still the top goalscorer though but lost his place in the England team. He even missed the league cup final through injury but it was still to get worse for Bowater. He had become less feared as a striker and he wasn't considered a top player now, even though at 27 he should have been entering his peak. Many blamed Millwall for holding him back and not letting him develop as a player.2014/2015 summed up this. He had made a deent enough start to the season but in November tore his groin again and was supposed to be out for about 3 months. With Millwall facing a relegation battle he was rushed back early only to suffer the same injury again. Two months later he was again rushed back fully fit and the injury was agravated again. Despite it being 3 months at least he should have been out for he was back playing in a month, only to suffer the injury for the 4th time in 6th month. Millwall survived the drop by 1 point and Bowater was never the same again. He had fallen out with the Millwall staff over this and the free flowing goals never came back. His injury problems were so well publicised that no teams wanted to make a bid for him, so he was stuck again at Millwall. His 18 goals in 44 games werent enough to save Millwall as they plumetted down to 19th. Still he remained injury free and impressed Man Utd officials enough that they made a £12.75m bid for him which was duly accepted. It was regarded as the move he should have made a few years ago and he never quite settled in. His first season was much less impressive than people would have hoped. With better service around him he was expected to bang in the goals but expectations added too much pressure and he only scored 8 goals in 35 games in the league, and only 12 goals in 47. Utd fell to 5th in the league and the fans were unimpressed. This didnt help Bowater and as he turned 29 his pace and strength was beginning to falter. He did though, establish himself as a regualr for England again and his performances for the 3 lions, away from the pressures of club expectations were fantastic. The next 3 seasons were unsuccesful for Man Utd but Bowater got plenty of goals for them, 15, 17 and 15 in the league in the 3 seasons that followed. However he reached 32 in summer of 2020 and people felt he never quite lived up to his early promise. He had 1 move to prove his doubters wrong, but eyebrows were raised when Betis spent £7.25m on him, as for a 32 year old that was a huge risk. He didnt play regularly as Soler and Costa was an impressive partnership but the slower game abroad helped him. He looked a class act when he played and scored 9 goals in 13 league games. In Europe he inspired the team into the Champoions League Final. On the biggest stage of all he scored the 3rd goal in a 3-1 win and finally had his hands on major silverware. The European Super Cup and intercontinental cup followed. The next season he was used sparingly but started in the Champions League again. His early goal was cancelled out late on but Betis won with a golden goal and he got his 2nd Champions League winners medal. He was still Englands star man as well, and made 2 appearances in the 2022 World Cup (hosted in England). His Betis contract ran out and he signed with Sporting Gijon but in 2 seasons he had become a Betis legend. 2022/2023 proved to be his final season as a player. He announced before it began it would be his last season. He was inspirational as Gijon chased the league title. It proved not to be the perfect final season though as Gijon could only finish 2nd. He was runner up in European Player of the Year and European Striker of the year, and all his doubters had to accept what a player he had been. He retired at the top but it wasnt the last we saw of him. In July 2023 he was made manager of Hamilton. In an amazing parallel with his playing career his coaching career began in Scottish Division 1. He made some inspired signings, and led them to Challenge Cup glory and took them to the league cup final as well. He took them to the top of Division One as well, and after only 8 months in the job he was approached by Betis to replace Iker Casillas. He grabbed the chance to manage one of Europes biggest clubs and could now go on to have a coaching career which matched his playing careeer. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. Liverpool Major Honours Premiership 2005,2018 League Cup 2020Back in 2001 Liverpool were a good team with an outside chance of the title and likely for a good cup run. In 2024 nothing much has changed. A major point from Liverpools history was Heskey being top scorer for 5 consectuvie seasons, notching up over 20 goals a season. However since the 2018 title win (handed on a plate after a spectaculer Blackpool collapse) things havent been going so well. A lack of goals is a huge problem for the club at the moment. £12m man Colin Henderson played regularly and scored 12 goals in 6 seasons for the club. He was a striker. Mark Vos cost £10m. In 2021/2022 he scored 1 goal in 34 appearances. 12 league goals over 4 seasons for him. In 2020 their top scorer was the centre back! Bottom half finishes have become commonplace the last few years and although they did reach the league cup final in 2024 they lost on penalties. The club arent as rich as they once were after a series of expensive flops and the future isnt bright at the moment. Bradford City Major Honours 3rd Division 2024 A fantastically mediocre 23 years with a few relegations, the odd promotion and the division 3 championship in 2024. They did noticeablly have Doung Thatch on their books for 1 season, who went on to become the Worlds top striker and is their top league goalscorer with 80 goals in his 3 years at the club. Set a new division 3 record for number of points in a season with 101. Luton finished 2nd on a 100! Yeovil Major Honours FUCK ALL Never entered the league. Had the odd good FA Cup run. (4th round 2012, lost 2-0 to Arsenal). -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? They're a mile away and you have their shoes. Ian McIntyre DOB: 20/6/2000 Age: 24 Scottish: 57 Caps 39 Goals Club Career Derby (2016-2022) 41 Apps 4 Goals Watford (2022-2023) 52 Apps 5 Goals Derby (2023-) 8 Apps 0 GoalsIan McIntyre, at only 24, has had possibly the strangest career of all time. His 4 goals meant he finished joint top scorer in Euro 2024 as he was a part of the Scotland team that successfully defended their title in style. He has the best international strike rate in football and he is Scotlands top scorer. Having burst onto the scene he is one of Europes most feared strikers...when hes in a Scotland shirt. In a club shirt he is a poor Division 1 striker. His club strikerate is bettered by some defenders in 2023/2024 he only made 7 starts. Ian McIntyre was singled out by scouts as a major talent at a very early age. A host of clubs wanted his signature but Derby won through and he signed on in 2016 when he turned 16. He didnt appear for Derby that season but on June 6th 2017, aged only 16, he made his Scotland debut in the middle of an inury crisis. The match was away to Ukraine in a World Cup qualifier and they lost 2-1. His performance was average but their was a lot of fuss about this young talent. He made his breakthrough at the same time as Billy Duncan, but while Duncan is a Premiership striker his international career has faltered. McIntyres breakthrough on the international stage came in his second cap. The September 2017 World Cup Qualifier against Latvia was memorable for the amazng performance that essentially guaranteed us a place in the next world cup. After a quiet first half McIntyre starred in the second half. His good positioning meant he was in the right place when Irvines shot was parried so he slotted home his first international goal. A few minutes later he got his second with a great header to put Scotland 6-1 up. A star was born and the press went mad. Still his progress with Derby was slow and he made no first team appearnaces all season. 4 days later he played well as Scotland got a 1-1 draw in Portugal which meant we were off to World Cup 2018. He made no more appearances at any level until his appearance in the March 2018 friendly against Switzerland. With the scores locked at 1-1 McIntyre came on at HT and grabbed 2 goals. One was a 25 yard wonder strike and the other a mere tap in from a cross. He was showing a real skill at finishing though and was MOM in the 5-2 win. He was named in the World Cup squad but nobody outside Scotland really knew his potential. They were soon to find out. McIntyre sat out the first two games. Scotland at this time were a building a great reputation under Stephen Moffat, and were expected to hammer the USA in the first game. In one of the World Cups most remarkable games, Scotland had 20 shots on goal and 15 on target yet lost 2-1. A 36 year old Landon Donovan scored the winner in one of the WC greatest shocks. Scotland were stunned, and looking back McIntyre remembers the mood at the time. "We were convinced we were out. Losing to them meant we had to beat France who at the time were amazing. I desperately wanted to play as I felt I could finish some of the chances created but I had to sit out again." In a game against a France side packed with talent Scotland produced an outstanding performance. Every player was a hero and Rae scored the vital goal after half an hour. 18 year old Gordon Murray was preferred to McIntyre at the time. In the final game against Ireland McIntyre was again on the bench. But Murray was injured and McIntyre came on after only 5 minutes. It changed Scottish football history forever. He came on and with his first touch scored. A fantastic half volley on half an hour helped Scotland to a 4-0 victory and the world sat up and took notice of this major talent. At the time McIntyre didnt realise the fuss. "We were stuck in a training camp and I didnt realise what I had done. To me I had just shown the boss what I was capable of. I was young and played without fear." The next game was Mexico in the 2nd round. McIntyre was rewarded with a starting place. Scotland played some free-flowing football and created plenty of chances. They were up against a great keeper but McIntyre scored the only goal of the game in the second half. He was the teams hero. A goal in the quarter finals then the winner in the semis and the magnitude of what he had done suddenly caught up with him. "I was 17 and had just scored the goal that was putting Scotland into the World Cup Final. It was everybodys dream to do that and for the few days before the final I was in heaven. I knew no matter what happened I would go down in Scottish football history. Plus our small country was putting years of hurt behind us" Coming Soon What did the final hold for McIntyre and where could he go from there? -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. The 2018 World Cup Final did not have the teams it was expected. Neither the Czechs or Scotland had major world class players but instead had tactical geniuses in charge and genuine team spirit. The perception is that Scotland then had a young team but aside from McIntyre, Young and Rae the team were mostly in their late 20s.With the streets of Scotland empty there was unbearable tension everywhere as the game began. However the team were still on a high from getting there and there were no nerves. After 22 minutes Murray Watson lined up a free-kick. It smashed the bar and came flying back to Ian McIntyre, as in the 30 year old defensive midfielder. From 25 yards out he smashed a volley in the top corner and all hell broke loose in Scotland. However as McIntyre admits the team lost concentration and only 6 minutes later the Czechs equalised through Novak and a minute after that they were 2-1 up when Sedlacek scored. It looked like another case of glorious failure for Scotland. "In the dressing room we were devastated at HT and we realised we were lucky to have held on at only 2-1 down as the heads dropped. But Moffat got us going and for the second half we were rejuvenated" It took just over ten minutes of the second half for Scotland to level. And it was 17 year old McIntyre becoming the youngest player since Pele to score in a fianl who got it. Young floated a cross in and McIntyre got there. The goal was seen by over 1 billion viewers worldwide and McIntyre was frimly a household name. In extra time he was played through one on one but Cech blocked the shot and McIntyre was devastated. "I didnt want us to lose on penalties after I'd missed that chance. I didnt want to take a penalty after that either." Penalties were exciting. Campbell missed but Baillie produced a save so they were tied 4-4 and it was on to sudden death. Klein smashed over the bar at 5-4 and Scotland were 2018 World Champions. McIntyre was the worlds hottest prosepct. Things didnt go well for him after that at Derby. He finally made his debut and played 12 times that season, but only scored 3. His performances were very disappointing though and he didnt seem happy playing at Derby. His international form suffered with no goals in 2019/2020 and Derby werent interested in him either and he went in to the 2020 European Championships at 19 and very much a wasted talent in the eyes of many. 2020 was very much a failure for McIntyre with only 1 goal but as Scotland went on to win it it was all forgoteen. A 2-0 win against England in the groups had people dancing in the streets and a penalty shoot out win against Ireland then a 3-0 win over Croatia (McIntyre on target) left them playing Holland. "I hadnt had the best of tournaments but we were winning and that was important. We all look good when we win. It was just so good to get away from club football and play regularly. To reach the final of this was unbeleivable and whatever happened just playing in the final was great" Holland were a team full of great players but never quite good as a team. But after a 50th minute Roosien goal it looked like Hollands day. McIntyre had a diaster firing 6 shots at goal all of which that went wide. Then from a 90th minute corner 19 year old Alex Wright fired a 25 yard volley that beat the keeper and went in. After such a blow we were always going to win, and with Hollands suspect penalty record it was name on the trophy. We won 4-1 on pens and McIntyre aged 19 had won footballs two biggest trophys. Surely his club career could improve. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? They're a mile away and you have their shoes. Sorry I was waiting for a few more requests so I could group them altogether. I'll do some over the next few days. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? They're a mile away and you have their shoes. I have no more to say

Due to the 2018 WC Win there was no competitve games until the 2002 World Cup. Scotland played a host of friendlys. Notable results included a 4-0 win over England and a 5-0 win over Irelenad, )all goals in the second half). 5 goals in 10 appearances for McIntyre kept him in the starting line up. At club level it was all going wrong. He made 5 sub appearances in 2021 and 2022 and in the summer his contract wasnt renewed. At the age of 22 the player who was tipped at 18 to become the Worlds top player was without a club. World Cup 2022 wasn't a happy experience either. After 1 goal in 4 games he was injured and missed the rest of the tournament, Scotland eventually losing to Brazil in the semi. McIntyres performances were poor and with an injury and no club it looked for a while like it could be the end for Scotlands most famous player. "It was very worrying. Teams were interested for ages, as I still had a reputation, but I was injured and unable to have a trial and no team wanted the risk. Eventually just before I was due to play for Scotland Watford offered me a deal" The rest of 2022 was a bit of a diaster for McIntyre. No goals for Scotland and a very poor start to his Watford career. Nobody could quite explain what was wrong, he just couldnt score and Ian Cameron became the new Scotland golden boy with goals for Scotland and internationally. However in the friendly against Switzerland he got a goal and then another from a penalty spot, impressively his 20th and 21st goals for Scotland. Two goals in the 3-1 win against San Marino had his international career back on track. The season ended for him with a glorious double against Norway in a 3-0 win in June which all but sealed Euro 2024 qualification. The next season started poorly for McIntyre and he was quickly dropped from the team. Blackpool, reigning European Champions and managed by Moffat had a number of bids strangely turned down by Watford. In the end back to Derby offered the only escape for McIntyre. He was always a Derby fan and new manager Scott Wilson offered him first team football. After September he only made 2 starts! He has played 8 times for his club in under a year and his career is very close to peetering out altogether. Despite a major reputation for his performance for Scotland his club record means few people take the risk. However his record for Scotland in 2023/2024 was truely sensational. 4 goals in a 4-2 win against Macedonia and he was back hugely confident. He got the goal against Romania and scored two and missed a penalty against San Marino. 2 goals in a 4-0 win against Ireland had him nicely warmed up for Euro 2024. It was a great tournament for him. A goal in the opening game signalled his intentions and he grabbed a vital 2 goals against hosts Germany when at one point we looked to be heading out. He scored in the semi and played in his 3rd major final when Scotland beat Holland 2-1 to claim the prize. He is set to get his 40th Scotland goal soon and at international level is a major threat. One day his club career might imrpove, at 24 there is still time. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares? Arsenal - Always been in the Premiership with wins in 2002,2003,2008,2011,2015 and 2016. The FA Cup was won in 2010 and 2012. European success has alluded them but they have been major domestic players, though Blackpool stole their thunder the last few years. They were 2nd in 2023/2024, the latest season I've finished. There star player is Scotland midfielder Peter Rae.Leeds - They took ten years to work their way up to the Worlds best team, winning the World Club Champiosnhip in 2012, beating Elversberg in the final. 2004,2006,2009 and 2014 saw Premiership wins, 2006 and 2022 saw FA Cup wins and the league cup was won in 2005 and 2015. The Champions League was won in 2010, and they were runners up in 2003. They were the top team in England for 12 years with Alan Smith the hero. However in 2018 they were relegated, and spent 3 seasons in Division One. In their first season back they were 2nd though and re-established themselves. Martin Porter and David Holmes are the stars. Norwich - A slow and steady decline. They have really been in and out Divisions two and three since the 2012 releagation. Spent two season in Divison two in the 2000s before returning with the championship won in 2009. In 2016 finished 22nd in Division three, very close to being relegated out the league altogether, but won promotion but were relegated first season in division two in 2023/2024. Torquay - A slow and steady increase in fortunes for the gulls. Yo-yoed between Div 2 and 3 before winning Div 2 in 2016. Now a yo-yo club between divisions one and two, changing division 6 times in 8 years, winning Div 2 in 2020 and 2023. Currently back in Division 2 and have made an horrendoues start to the 2024/2025 season. Derby - Relegated in 2020 to Division one having never troubled anybody in the Prem except for the 2008 season when they finished a distant 2nd. Did find form in the League Cup, winning in 2014, 2016 and 2021. Despite some taleneted players in their ranks (Ian McIntyre and Ian Whitehead are international class) they are closer to relegation than promotion. -------------------- Before you judge a man, walk a mile in their shoes. Stephen Moffat Manager CLUBS: Elversberg 2001-2012 Blackool 2012-2024 Queen of the South 2024-Major Honours Leagues Won: 13 Cups Won: 27 Awards Won: 50 P1316 W779 D288 L249 Back in 2001 Elversberg was a small team supported by abot 2000 locals. In 2024 they were Germanys top team. Much of this transformation came about under the guidance of Stephen Moffat who took the team up the leagues and won 2 Champions League finals before leaving. Season 2001/2002
- League: 8th Place
- German Cup 1st Round
30th June 2001 was when Elversberg appointed Scottish boss Stephen Moffat as manager. The 34 year old defender was looking for a job but without good experience Elversberg in the German regionals offered him the job. It all started poorly. A team with Ottiji, Lawson and Gibson had high hopes for promotion. The first season was poor. Moffat looked tactically naive and the team failed to perform. With about ten games of the season left and Elversberg way off the promotion chase it looked like he was going to be sacked. With the benefit of hindsight the board should feel amazing stupid. However a remarkable series of draws, seven in a row at the end of his season saved his job and with a 4-2 win over VFB Stuttgart (A) the team finished 8th. Still in the summer it was made clear it was promotion or bust for him. He never looked back...Season 2002/2003
- Regional League: 8th Place
- German Cup 1st Round
In July 2002 he made a host of signings that changed Elversberg and the history of football. Going with his Scottish roots Paddy Connoly and John Andersen came in, along with young Italian forward Marco Dini. An attacking brand of football and great form from Dini and Ottiji meant some good results but 7th was the position again. However the board seemed pleased that foundations had been laid and Moffat had kept his job and now had plenty of years to build a squad. It was during the summer of 2003 that he developed some talents that went on to make some huge impacts.Patrick Klose Went on to play 7 times for Germany but a move to FC Bayern ruined him and he evntually descended into 2nd divison football instead of fulfilling his potential. Miguel Estevez Spanish had a solid career with Elversberg before moving onto HSV and later Hercules. Gary McCutcheon Came on loan from Kilmarnock. The outstanding performer in 2003/2004 with 31 league goals, a record which still stands to this day. If it wasnt for him Elversberg would have been relegated in 03/04 and may never have reached their great heights. Despite only 1 season before a move to Hertha he is still a legend in these parts. Moffats signings of these players in Summer 2003 set up the team for an all conquering promotion season.
