[Demerit]

Note: 20-20 Has nothing to do with this story it was just the first thing off the top of my head.

July 2004, I was driving down from London to my small cottage in Hertfordshire when I recieved a call from my personal assistant Danny.
" Heeeey Ben, I just got a call from Mr.Duba! YOU GOT THE JOB BUDDY!" He yelled down the phone. I was gobsmacked. Words could not describe the emotional orgasm that was filling up inside my stomach the moment I heard that sentance. Mr Duba was the chairman of Madureira EC in the Brazilian National Third Division. My first managerial job ever and it was so close. I packed my bags immediately and set off for Rio and the small summer house my parents have had since I was 14.

I went in to see Mr.Duba the following morning and he said to me that I had 190K to spend on players to rebuild the team. I had come at a good time in the season. Halfway through the brazilian season and the Third division groups had only just started. My team were 7th but only 7 points off the top.
I decided to write a diary about my matches as I play them.

The team didn't look good when I went to the training ground that afternoon. The only glimpse of talent I saw was from Djair an experienced centre mid. I had only two days to pick my team and it looked like this.

GK - Cleber Moura - 24 Year old goalie with SHIT! stats!
DR - Pingoto - Good tackling for this league but bad stamina and OTB is awful
DL - Leo Jose - Awful player. Getting him replaced.
DC - Paulo Madureira - Overall a resonably good player
DC - Leo Fortunato - Good tackling and physical, lacks some other technical tho
MR - Peter - One of my best players, young with quite good physical
ML - Luis Renato - 2nd Best only to Djair, Good dribbling and physical
MC - Haroldo - 26 y/o and average, some good potential
MC - Djair - Very good overall could get into a lower half premiership team perhaps
FC - Adriano - Pretty shit tbh, getting replaced
FC - Joao Rodrigo - Good for this league, hopefully will net some goals

My squad has overall 3 Goalies, 11 defenders (1 on loan), 18 midfielders (6 on loan) and 8 strikers. 50% of these players are worse than my grandmother, I will need to rebuild my squad alot and sell off or release the unwanted players.

My first game was against Bragantino and the odds where against us.

Match Background
Madureira manager on debut for club, Madureira sitting 7th out of 8 at the moment in group two in the Brazilian National Third Division. Whist Bragantino were in a comfortable 3rd place.
Match Events

Madureira got off to a terrible start when Geovanni scored a deflected freekick from 30 yards in the 2nd minute to put Bragantino 1-0 up.

Madureira then got close to equalising in the 9th minute but for a diving header off the line from Bragantino centre back Silvio.

Then after 22 minutes of persistance Madureira finally got their reward, a beautifully crafted move swinging the ball in from the left by Peter after Geovanni gave the ball away in the centre, then a perfect looping header over the goalkeeper by Djair to make it 1-1.

Bragantino hit right back in the 25th minute with a wonderful half volley from Joao Santos and Bragantino were back in front.

Luis Renato then came close several times, twice from freekicks and a powerful close range effort clawed away by Luis Fernando the Bragantino goalkeeper.

Then on the 41st minute a freekick from the left by Djair was deflected off the wall and hit the post and Joao Rodrigo hammered in the rebound to make in even 2-2.

Half Time

Joao Rodrigo again came close with a header from 6 yards only to be denied by a super diving save from the Bragantino goalie.

Haroldo swung in a corner and headered off the line by Silvio and then Bragantino hit Madureira on the counter attack with an amazing run by Alex Franca then for him to strike in wide of the near post.

Then in the last minute Bragantino almost robbed Madureira who had, had 68% of the possesion with a freekick on the edge of the area palmed into the crowd by Cleber Moura

After a quite successful opening game to my career I headed off to the scouting office to see my one and only scout Roberto Pereira. I said to him:
"Yo Robbie! You go find me some talent yeah and I give you a creme egg and a mars bar. You gotta go look in that country that we in.... Brazil! Yeah! Get me some young talent. Nobody over 22! I gotta plan for the future you know!"

So he went and he looked for talent in Brazil bye bye Rob.

Meanwhile my chairman was planning some new signings and I looked at the sheet of paper called "Future Transfers In" and I saw some of the worst players ever. So I said to him. "Leave it to me buddy" And he did.

I searched for some older experienced players that I could get cheap and keep for a season or two. I found:

Magna - 8K - A young 22 year old keeper from Juventude, he was good quality for my league and I decided to sign him up straight away. He accepted my contract offer of £95 a week (HAHAHA) and packed his bags and flew over.

Tanielton - 45K - An experienced winger good crossing and quite pacey.

Alessio - 30K - 33 Year old striker who has netted 11 in 14 this season.

Marcelao - 55K - Also 33 years of age a centre back from Portuguesa.

I am also attempting to buy left back Raone from Juventude for 14K but the deal is far from certain because about 30 other teams are interested in him.

Match 2.
Madureira v Inter de Limeira
Match Background
Madureira coming off a 2-2 draw with Bragantino whilst Inter de Limeira had lost all their games so far in the third division
Match Events

A slow start to the match but after 22 minutes Inter had the 1st attack, a long range shot from Ferreria went sailing over the crossbar.

Leo Jose gave the ball away in a dangerous area allowing Inter to counter attack with Fabiano who crossed in the ball and Waddison missed the target by an inch.

Madureira where the next to attack with Luis Renato feeding the ball to Djair who smashed the ball over the crossbar from 20 yards.

Madureira continued attacking with several chances the best of those coming from an Adriano cross into the box and Joao Rodrigo tapping it wide.

Then in the 35th minute a wreckless challenge inside the box by Gilmar saw him recieving a second yellow card and a penalty for Inter. Fortunatly for Madureira, Ferreria hammered it over the crossbar. A giant cheer exploding from the home end.

41st minute and Madureira where applying the pressure. Luis Renato with a high cross to the far post and Adriano's diving header to be denied by a stunning save.

Half Time

Straight after the break in the 48th minute Joao Rodrigo ran unchallenged down the left flank, crossfield ball to Peter on the right who brings it into the area. A low cross to Joao Rodrigo headered back to the unmarked Djair on the edge of the box to blast a phenominal volley into the back of the net for 1-0!

There was now no stopping Madureira from extending their lead but the post when Peter's ball fell to Luis Renato to dribble into the 6 yard box and attempt to slot the ball into the right hand side of the goal only to curl away and onto the post.

Then after several Inter attacks the manager decided to play it safe and play 5 at the back, 3 in midfield and 1 upfront. It looked like the 10 men of Rio where going to hold out for the win.

The goalkeeping wonder of Cleber Moura had to come in to action in the 80th minute though to deny Fabio Lopes an easy goal after Leo Jose let the ball run past him twice.

Just before the full time whistle Djair released a skin breaking shot onto the far upright, another scare for the Inter manager.

I had climbed to 3rd after that win and had a tough match against 2nd place Bangu in a weeks time and I hoped my transfers came through before then.

Luckily for me they did and my updated team looked like this:

Bangu v Madureira
Match Background
Bangu and Madureira are only a point apart, Bangu's manager complained earlier in the week about Ben King the Madureira's manager's faithfulness, King responded kindly and ignored further mind games with this ignorrant character.
Match Events

Madureira couldn't have asked for a better start, In the 1st minute, Wellington bringing down Luis Renato on the edge of the box then a short freekick by haroldo to an unmarked debutie Marcelao who lobbed it over the crowd of player in the centre and into the top left corner for 1-0!

Bangu then had many chances alot of them being freekicks only to be denied by some outstanding saves by new Madureira keeper Manga.

Then in the 16th minute a long freekick inside the Madureira half from Leo Jose into the Bangu box was collected easilt by Djair and slotted into the botten left hand corner for 2-0!!

Bangu again had many many chances but still it seemed the goalkeeper was to prove invicible.

Half Time

Bangu where attacking straight from the kickoff with a close range drive from Fabiano Silva whistled past the post much to the relief of the Madureira supporters and players.

Finally after much persistance Bangu got thier reward form a freekick from the substiute dudu was deflected into the bottem right corner of the net, the goalkeeper helpless diving the wrong way. 2-1 to Madureira.

7 minutes later (the 72nd minute) Bangu struck again, this time through the unmarked Fabiano Silva who could easily pass the ball past Manga into the back of the net to pull the sides level. 2-2.

Just as Bangu looked to be making a great come back. A poor goal kick gave the ball to Luis Renato who passed to Alessio, his first shot was parried away and the ball fell to the Bangu full back Wellington, a poor first touch gave the ball straight back to Luis Renato who passed it to the unmarked Alessio to slot in for his 1st goal in his debut. 3-2.

Then to put the icing on the cake and to make a slighly flattering result for the away team a long goalkick by Magna found Gustavo who played a great through ball to Alessio to run into the box then pass back to Willan to put past the goalie for his first goal of the season. 4-2

Madureira v Uniao Sao Joao
Match Background
Madureira 2nd in the group against Uniao Sao Joao who are top, If Madureira win this match they could close the gap at the top to just 3 points. Madureira this week are still talking with the agents of Brazilian Raone from Juventude. The fullback is still considering the contract offer from Madureira and we do not know what his decision is at this time. Also Adriano is filling in for the suspended Alessio(3 Yellow Cards)
Match Events

Madureira had a promising start with a few shots from Adriano saved easily by Gilson.

In the 23rd minute Joao Paulo broke away from the defence and was 1on1 with Magna. Paulo went for the lob but amazingly Magna made it back in time to punch it off the goal line!

Uniao then looked the better team for most of the 1st half making good runs through the centre and hitting Madureira on the break. Joao Paulo had a good effort from way out saved by the grateful Magna.

Just before the half time whistle Tanielton ran down the right hand side then passed the pass into the centre for Djair to take a quick shot at goal which was tipped onto the bar by the Uniao keeper.

Half Time

In the 64th minute Lico had an effort palmed round the post by Magna and then the resulting corner falling to Edson Di who found the bar which a strong overhead kick.

Djair almost broke the deadlock with a deadly strike outside the box that was swerving everwhere. Luckily for Uniao, Gilson held onto the ball firmly.

Then there was a very uneventful period of 25 minutes until finally there was a chance where Gustavo for Madureira dribbled the ball into the opposition half, then found Tanielton who chinked past his man and then found Adriano with an accurate pass. Adriano swiveled on the ball and put it on his right foot and struck with power but too much and it went inches over the crossbar.

I had now waited for 3 weeks for Raone to accept or reject my contract and I was loosing patience. The media asked me a question while at a press conference about the matter.

Annoying big titted news presenter : You have made an impressive start how much of it was down to you or to the players

Me: Well tittsie(thats her name honest) most of the credit must go to the players for performing so spectacularly over the last few weeks and I think we can overcome any obstacle in our path without any real difficulty.

Tittsie: Well thats good to hear. I'll let you get back to whatever it is you do.

After that short interview I promised myself never to gloat to big titted news people again for whenever I do I seem to lose the next match.

Match Background
XV are sitting bottem of the group whilst Madureira are in 3rd following a draw with the group leaders Uniao Sao Joao last week. The Madureira players are in good form and in good moods after King's comments to the media midweek could this prove a boost in todays game. Lets Find out.

The match got off to a quick start with Luis Renato running down the left touchline and cutting inside only to be stopped by a perfectly timed tackle from Josimar. The resulting corner from Tanielton headered away and XV were on the counter attack with Carlao running through the centre with options left, right and infront. He chooses left to Dino Sani who is unmarked and brings it into the box. A good cross and a header from Cuca but stopped suddenly by an outstretched arm from Magna.

6 Minutes in Madureira had a real chance to score when a beautiful ball from Tanielton found Joao Rodrigo who then ran into the box and fired a low shot at the near post. The ball rebounded off the upright and then rolled across the goal line and fell to Cleber to hammer it out for a throw in.

Just a minute later and XV where on the attack through Jura passing the ball onto Dino Sani who then gave it to Andre Pinto with a 1on1 oppertunity only for it to be stopped by Magna.

After another 4 minutes XV had a corner that was headed away to Tanielton, what a run he's gone past two and a superb ball to Alessio, he only has the keeper to beat! Goal! Alessio scores with a powerful drive into the top corner.

XV were then on the attack. A series of passes through the midfield left a gap in the Madureira defence a perfect through ball from Carlao found Dino Sani unmarked. Can Sani equalize! NO! He's missed!

Good ball by Jura for Cuca, Cuca with a 1*2 with Reginaldo a good pass to Andre Pinto who strikes the ball.... Fine Save by Magna.

Tanielton gives the ball away easily to Cuca who finds Andre Pinto in the centre unmarked, Pinto finds Anderson Cruz unmarked on the left side who crosses it to Dino Sani who lays it back to Carlao who shoots...Goal! In the top left hand corner of the goal!. That makes it 1-1!

With 40 minutes gone XV are really applying the pressure, a good move down the right finds Cuca in the centre who shoots... inches wide!

Half Time

Straight from the start XV attack, Carlao is brought down on the edge of the area. Its Josimar to take the freekick, swung in high to the penalty spot, Carlao with a powerful header

Then in the space of 10 minutes Madureira had 12 chances each of them saved or missed. They changed to a 4-3-3 attacking formation to try and trouble the XV defence.

XV Had one final attack in 90 +2, Cuca passed it short to Carlao who dribbled past Pingoto with ease. He then crossed in the ball to Dino Sani to knock on to Andre Pinto who smashed it into the back of the net. XV had stolen the win in the last move of the game. If you looked into the hearts of 11 men in that moment you would be 11 organs crumblings and tearing apart. These players spirits had been harmed today no doubt. But they will hopefully have enough bouncebackability to get the win against Olaria a week later.

Match Events

Straight from the kick off Olaria were on the attack with Leo playing the ball in for Ely Thadeu to take a long shot....wide of the mark.

Quarter of an hour in and Olaria have a freekick about 40 yards out, they play it fowards to Ely Thadeu who turns and shoots.. Inches wide!

Ely Thadeu picks the ball up 40 yards from goal he dribbles it 10 yards then passes it to Luciano in the box, Luciano 1on1.... He drives it high into the stands behind the Madureira goal!

This is a good start from Olaria, Madureira need to start attacking or they will make a breakthrough.

Tanielton with the corner for Madureira, to the edge of the box Djair picks it out of the air and brings it down, he dribbles into the area and hits it.. Pushed over the bar from the fingertips of Ricardo!

5 minutes before half time and Olaria are on the attack again through Ely Thadeu he gives it to Luciano who lays it off for William to have a crack, good save by Magna by the danger is not cleared it goes back to Cristiano who shoots! Another good save from Magna, he holds it this time.

Corner for Madureira to be taken by Tanielton, he takes it short to Joao Rodrigo who lays it back to Tanielton for the cross, Alessio goes up for the header, and its cleared off the line!

Half Time

Tanielton with a corner for Madureira, he crosses it to the edge of the box, it's Haroldo with the drive, it curls just wide!!

Tanielton with another corner, he puts it into the centre and it's headered back to Djair who goes for the top corner! No! A wondersave from Ricardo denies a great goal!

Raone with the throw to Luis Renato on the left side who gives it to Djair and back to Raone. Raone swings in the ball tot he near post and Joao Rodrigo is up there but he heads just over the bar!

Leo Fortunato wih the freekick to Tanielton on the right wing, Tanielton goes past his marker and crosses the ball into the penalty spot. Joao Rodrigo headers it back to Tanielton for the cross. Its headered away and Olaria are on the counter attack with Rodrigo! He gives the ball to Luciano on the left who dribbles it furthur downt he pitch but Tanielton makes a good tackle! He dummies the cross and goes past his opponent, he passes it to Joao Rodrigo who shoots, off the bar! It's fallen to Alessio who shoots off the bar again!! Cleared by Leo.

A freekick for Madureira to be taken by Haroldo. He swings it in Djair is on the end of it... Over the bar!

Tanielton with another freekick from the right, he puts the ball in the box and its given back to him by Alessio. He shoots, over the bar.

Tanielton picks up the ball on the centre spot and finds Alessio with a long pass, he gives it to Joao Rodrigo on the right and he swings in the cross to the far post for Gil Bala the substitute who hammers it low near post. Tipped away by Ricardo.
