From memory, reviews said Sunshine was quite good though, and that was a absolute travesty.

I've played the opening to Mario galaxy and it did look pretty good mind.

Played this in more depth over Chritsmas and I'm very meh about the whole thing. It's very easy and I really don't like the levels spread out over planets for each galaxy.

That said it's still very good, but like Zelda it fails to reach the heights of its N64 counterpart but improves on the Gamecube version.

They're pretty irrelevant, unless you're really shit.

Fry Crayola
26-04-2008, 11:55 AM
The game only gives you five lives when you load it. It's not taking a specific amount away as a punishment for saving or anything, it's just design, and it is entirely pointless. Mario games haven't needed lives since Super Mario Bros 3, when they introduced saving.

Offshore Toon
26-04-2008, 11:58 AM

Anyway, I plan on really racing through SMG this weekend, what with GTA coming up.

Fry Crayola
26-04-2008, 12:05 PM
I haven't played this since before Christmas. It's got nothing to do with the quality of the game though, it's really only because I got the Orange Box and then got sidetracked with other stuff.

I'll probably go back to it in bursts soon enough. It's the perfect type of game for playing an hour here, an hour there, over the course of a few months until it's done.

Lightly Salted
26-04-2008, 01:42 PM
Yeah short bursts are best after you've completed the main "story". You would think that, playing through again after getting all 120 stars would be harder. Why couldn't they have just hiked up the the difficulty to make it more challenging. But no I get to play through as a new character who is a few steps away from being retarded and they throw 20 extra lives on you when you start instead of the normal 5.

The skill of youngsters today seems to be built on repetition instead of challenge like games of the 80s/90s.

This game is absolutely joyous; in the music, the sublime art direction, the gameplay. Everything about it is just so wondrous. This is definitely the perfect answer to those who say the Wii is a poor console because of the graphics.

Recently bought a Wii, and the girlfriend and me are having a great time with this game. We only picked up 21 stars so far, and I think this game will last us a while as we only play a few hours here and there. Took me 12 bloody lives to beat that blue Mario guy on the Bee galaxy, so I might struggle later on.

Love our the two player works, and how it takes no time to get loads of lives. Overall what a charming game this is.

19-12-2008, 08:14 PM
I've just spent around 9 hours on this today. Like everyone else has said, it is jolly good fun. Onto the third galaxie now and there's only one star I haven't been able to get yet; the cosmic comet race on the bee planet. I takes me about 3 attempts do the super-jumpy-backwards-thingy, so he beats me easily every time.

How long did it take for you guys to complete this? I've got about 2 weeks before I go back to uni.

ItalAussie
20-12-2008, 01:12 AM
I suspect that two weeks is enough for completion, but maybe not 100% completion.

Vcassano
20-12-2008, 09:29 AM

Samadini, the best way to beat the Cosmic Mario/Luigi is to use the crouch-forward jump where you release z just as you jump to get a huge jump.

I haven't found any impossible, and I've most of the way through.

Which ones specifically?

You can just skip stars if you don't want to get them, as well. There's more than enough to finish the game. I've been skipping most of the red/blue comets, because I hate speedruns.

Jonezy Foxile
20-12-2008, 02:21 PM
Only got 34 stars now, havent played so much lately, but the holidays should give me and the girlfriend time to get some stars.

Haven't given up on a star yet, but I think I'll skip the speed runs like ItalAussie as well. Samadini, that run on the bee level; you can shortcut up over the cliff and jump directly to the waterfall, then you will only need one super backward jump. Remember to jump as fuck in the honey or you'll get stuck.

Bubble level been the highpoint so far. And swimming is fun, but christ I'm whack at those controls.

Vcassano
21-12-2008, 10:43 AM
There are only a couple of speedruns in there: the races against cosmic Mario/Luigi. The Super Mario 64 collectathons are almost all gone too, as I think only a couple of the purple comets are not unique set ups.

Also mfphonics how is the Wii controller terrible? It works absoutely perfectly with the game and I fail to see any better method of control that enables finesse while still capturing the viscera nature of the spin attacks.

ItalAussie
21-12-2008, 11:41 AM
It depends on what you're used to.

I'm very much not used to the Wii controller, so it took some time to master. I think it could work with a regular controller if done right, but I don't have any real problems.

Oh, and swimming levels can go jump. Swimming has never been implemented well in a 3D platformer. Not ever.

@Vcassano: I just hate the Wii controller. It's in-accurate, fiddly and generally pisses me off. You could easily have SMG without 'gestures'. My main problem with the Wii isn't SMG anyway. I just can't stand the control and the pointless gestures that are only implemented because they have to be.

It wouldn't be as good without the visceral feel of the spin or the collection of star bits with the pointer. That said it isn't perfect for every game and 'waggle' can be diabolical if not done right; just look at Twilight Princess. However with certain games it is perfect, such as Resident Evil 4.

I beat him without losing any health first time in the actual level, but then it took me about half a dozen goes to do it when the Daredevil Comet showed up :moop:.

I've got 116 stars. The remaining stars I need to get:

- Cosmic Mario Race in the Gold Leaf galaxy (Not too difficult, just haven't gotten around to it)
- Purple Comet Challenge on the Toy Land galaxy (Hardest in the game, I suspect)
- Purple and Red Comet Challenges on the Dreadnought galaxy (Haven't tried either yet).

The other stars have ranged from insanely difficult (such as the hidden star on Dreadnought Galaxy) to surprisingly simple (such as the Trial Galaxies).

The frustrating thing is that I wasn't even going for 100% completion, as I borrowed it off a mate. However, if I'm that close, I may as well go for the last few stars.

100% completion is 242 stars not 120 :dc:

But you are right that Luigi's Purple Coins (Toy Land Galaxy's Purple Comet)

Is the purple coin in Toy land the one with the flipping and disappearing platforms?

If so, then it was easily the hardest level in the game for me. Took me so many attempts.

No problems with Luigi's Purple Coins?
It took me a few tries, but I got there in the end.

Once I realised that I didn't need to get every single coin, but that I could skip the trickier ones, it wasn't so bad. It's vital to have a planned route though.

The good thing is that as long as you get a 1-up in each run, lives are a complete non-issue. You can tell some of the trickier levels, because there is a really obvious 1-up somewhere near the start.
