I currently have 5.0.2 installed and have my saved game. I've tried installing the 5.0.5 patch but to no avail. If I take a backup of my saved games directory and reinstall FM05, with 5.0.5, will my 5.0.2 game play?

Yes. :)

Thanks Tom.

I tried this last night and I got the same error as when I tried to load the patch before......

Unable to read current FM2005 folder.

Error 0x00000002 - The system cannot find the file specified.

....now I've seen that the resolution to this is to uninstall and reinstall which I've done. The resolution I saw mentioned that it was to do woth the registry. Should I just uninstall, delete any SIGames/Sports Interactive registry entries and reinstall? Are there any specific registry keys which need to be removed? I'm in IT support so don't worry about confusing me with tech talk.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, try that. That error message is very weird so it must be related to a corrupt registry key or something like that. There's no other way to explain it.

The registry key you need to delete is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sports Interactive Ltd.

You might also want to use a registry cleaner to repair any problems in your registry. I use RegClean (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,4666,00.asp). :y:

OK Tom, I'll try that. Like you say, its a weird one as the game is definitely installed!!

I'll let you know how I get on and maybe we could move this post to the FAQ's if it works.

Well I have no idea what is causing this error. I uninstalled and ran RegClean which didn't actually remove any SI keys. I then searched the registry manually and deleted all keys relating to SI, then rebooted.

Reinstalled, applied the patch and still get that god damn error. I've even tried using my mates CD which doesn't make a difference.

Its really p*ssing me off now!

Make sure you're running as an administrator when you install the patch (and the game for that matter too).

I'm pretty sure that my user is an administrator, but i'll log in as THE administrator user and try again - I was thinking that it must be permissions. I ran FileMon and can see that its having problem finding certain files, but most of them seem to be in the TEMP directory.

In that case it might be worth deleting everything in your temporary directory before installing the game, just in case it's a problem there.

Cool, I'll try that - hopefully that'll work.

Cheers for your ongoing help Tom!

No luck - I think I'm going to have to admit defeat. The only other option is to rebuild my PC but I am sure I tried that last time this happened when 5.0.3 came out.

I've even disabled my virus software and firewall incase they were blocking file access but the same thing happened. I tried to get into Safe Mode but could not so do.....is it F8 on start up? I tried that but got a different selection screen....asking me to choose the boot device.

Yes, it's F8. You can also use msconfig to start in safe mode when you next reboot.

No luck - I'm giving up on this one. Its really annoying as I've got a legit copy of the game and can't update it. SI's resoolution is to reinstall and i've tried that and it doesn't work.

If you have any more ideas on this post them here or e-mail me through my profile.

Thanks.

Just a quick update - I totally rebuilt my PC this morning and installed FM, and then attempted to upgrade to 5.0.5 but got the same fucking message! I should get my money back for not being able to upgrade!

If you ever find out what the resolution to this is, PLEASE let me know :'(

Try 5.0.3. It's basically the same patch, with slightly fewer fixes. :)

As the sketch goes in Little Britain....."Computer says no!". ;)

I think you may have to accept defeat then. :(

I think you are right. Just to check, my platform is Windows XP SP2 and I have my programs on the C drive and documents on the D drive, where the games tactics etc are kept.....would this make any difference?

Tom

Shouldn't do. All of my saved games and tactics are on D drive too.

Oh well, I've gone to the SI forums to see if they can help...worth a try I guess.

Thanks again.
