Default XML Parsing Error! *FIXED*

Hi,
I have not been able to play fm09 properly yet. I started one game and then this error came up after I saved it:
"not well formed (invalid token) at line 1 of last_saved_game.xml"

I have now deleted all files and uninstalled the game. Then started again FIVE TIMES NOW! and i still get the same error when there arent any saved games!

Anyone know what i can do?

XML Parsing error

If you have a shortcut on your desktop you can do the following:

* Right-click on the FM shortcut.
* Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
* In the "Target" field, add the --reset_preferences command line option after "fm.exe", so it should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --reset_preferences
* Press OK and then try to run the game as normal, using the shortcut.

You'll want to remove the command after you run the game, as otherwise it will continue to reset your preferences every time you launch.

If you don't have a shortcut you can make one and then perform the instructions on the shortcut you've made.

* If you purchased and installed the game through Steam you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:
C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Football Manager 2009/
* If you purchased and installed the game from a boxed DVD copy you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:
C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/

Hi

I get exactley the same problem.Tried the shortcut fix but can't find the fm exe file as installed from a geniune dvd copy'I have uninstalled and re-installed the game ets ,etc.I now have a game I paid £30 for that can't be played. The game was obviously rushed out to cash in on the xmas market. You only have to look at all the differant forums giving way to this error and others to realise this is a major problems.Sega do the right thing and give us our cash back or fix the problem ....shame on you

Hey jonlaw1365

Not to worry, you do not need to find the FM.EXE file. All you need to do is:

Right click the shortcut on your desktop and select properties, then just add --reset_preferences command line option after "fm.exe" to the target field.

Dead easy, I installed from the DVD and, provided you used the default installation options, the FM.EXE file is in C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\FM2009\

thanks for the advice but I have tried this several times but to no avail.I still get the same error message.I would of thought that be deleting all my game data and re-installing that any errors in saved game file would also be deleted but it seems not.The solution you have mentioned works for some errors but by no means all.
The game played well for about a week then whilst saving ,it froze and corrupted the save game file.No problem I thougnt as I always save the game twice but I can't even get as far as trying to load a differant un-corrupted game.
Any ideas guys/ladies would be much appreciated

I'm so pissed off now. Game was working fine but I started a new game and parsing errors keep coming up every single screen. Tried the fix but it won't accept the text in the target box. Using the waste of space that is steam.

I fixed this differently by deleting the settings folder which I think is in c/users/user name/appdata/roaming/sports interactive/fm09 it's something like that but it might not be exactly right. You might need to show hidden files to view the settings folder. You can do this by going to control panel then folder options change the tab to view then uncheck hide system files

If its a XML error about parsing, what i do is go to the folder directory containing the XML files and just delete (or move to another folder) the particular XML with the error.I get a few XML parsing errors every so often, deleting the files seems to work.

When you reload the FM save game,FM automatically creates a new XML file(s) of the one(s) you deleted that doesn't cause errors.

the directory containing the XML files should be something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\settings\Version 901

This guys a genius. I spent hours messing with things from other forums last night. I even tried this but the file I needed wasn't there. I reinstalled it again this morning and then the file was there. Excellent!!!

Thankyou so much
